DOT number lookup FAQ

What is a DOT number?

A USDOT number is a unique identifier the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) assigns to companies that operate commercial vehicles in interstate commerce. It's used to track a company's safety record, inspections, crashes, and compliance reviews.

How do I look up a DOT number?

Enter the USDOT number in the search box above and press Search. You'll instantly see the carrier's legal name, safety rating, operating authority status, out-of-service status, and fleet size from FMCSA records. Lookups are free with no signup wall.

Where do I find a company's DOT number?

Interstate carriers must display their USDOT number on both sides of their power units, usually on the cab door. It also appears on insurance certificates, rate confirmations, and carrier packets. If you only have the company name, use our carrier lookup by name.

What is the difference between a USDOT number and an MC number?

A USDOT number identifies a company for safety monitoring, while an MC (docket) number grants for-hire operating authority to transport regulated freight across state lines. Many carriers have both; this tool accepts either.

Is this DOT lookup free?

Yes. Web lookups are free and don't require an account. Developers who need programmatic access get 100 free API calls per month.

Where does the data come from?

All data comes from FMCSA SAFER web services — the same public records behind the government's Company Snapshot. VerifyCarrier is an independent tool and is not affiliated with FMCSA; the official source is safer.fmcsa.dot.gov.
