How to verify a trucking company

Whether you're a freight broker qualifying a carrier, a shipper vetting a quote, or a consumer checking a moving company, the process is the same: find the carrier in FMCSA records and check four things.

  1. Operating authority is ACTIVE — an inactive or revoked authority means the carrier cannot legally haul for-hire freight.
  2. Not out of service — an out-of-service order is an immediate disqualifier.
  3. Safety rating — SATISFACTORY is good; CONDITIONAL warrants scrutiny; UNSATISFACTORY carriers may not operate. Most carriers are unrated, which makes inspection-based BASIC scores worth reviewing.
  4. Insurance on file — confirm BIPD liability (and cargo coverage where relevant) is current before dispatching a load.

If you already have the number from a truck door or a rate confirmation, use the dedicated DOT number lookup or MC number lookup. You can also browse carriers by state in our state directory.

Frequently asked questions

How do I look up a carrier by company name?

Type the trucking company's name in the search box above (at least 3 characters) and pick the right match from the results. Names are matched against FMCSA's registered legal names, so if you don't find the company, try its exact legal name rather than a brand or DBA name.

How do I find a carrier's DOT number?

Every interstate carrier must display its USDOT number on the side of its trucks, usually on the cab door. It also appears on rate confirmations, insurance certificates, and carrier packets. If you only have the company name, search by name above and the result will show the DOT number.

What should I check before working with a carrier?

At minimum: (1) operating authority is ACTIVE, (2) the carrier is not out of service, (3) the safety rating is not UNSATISFACTORY, and (4) insurance is on file. Brokers should also document the check as part of their due-diligence process.

Is this carrier lookup free?

Yes — web lookups are free with no signup wall. Developers can also get 100 free API calls per month for programmatic access.

Where does the data come from?

All carrier data comes from FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) SAFER web services — the same public records behind the government's Company Snapshot. VerifyCarrier is an independent tool and is not affiliated with FMCSA.

What is the difference between a DOT number and an MC number?

A USDOT number identifies a company for safety monitoring; nearly every commercial interstate operator needs one. An MC (docket) number grants for-hire operating authority to move regulated freight across state lines. Many carriers have both.
